Meet the Team Tom Kenny

meet tom kenny - service apprentice

Last month, we looked at one of our colleagues who has proudly been with Neath Coachbuilders for over 40 years — a true reflection of the experience, loyalty and expertise within our team.

This month, we’re flipping the optics and turning the spotlight to the future of the business: our apprenticeship programme. Developing new talent is just as important to us as celebrating long-standing service, and Tom’s journey is a great example of how we continue to invest in the next generation of skilled engineers.

Since joining the team in September 2023, Tom has been building his skills in the workshop while completing his engineering apprenticeship.

From Neath, Tom attended Cefn Saeson Comprehensive School and developed an early interest in engineering through his GCSE studies. When the opportunity arose to start an apprenticeship locally, it felt like the right step.

“I always wanted a hands-on job,” Tom explains. “Engineering interested me in school, and this was a great way to get into the industry properly while learning on the job.”

Learning in the Workshop

Tom splits his time between college and the workshop, attending college one day a week to support the theoretical side of his training. The remainder of the week is spent gaining practical experience alongside the experienced technicians at Neath Coachbuilders.

“I definitely prefer being in the workshop,” he says. “That’s where you really learn.”

His day-to-day role involves shadowing team members, assisting with repairs and installations, and gradually taking on more responsibility as his confidence grows.

One area he has particularly enjoyed is working with specialist lifting equipment, including cranes, HIAB systems and Multilift equipment.

“It’s been really interesting learning about the cranes and how everything works,” he adds.

Developing Skills and Achievements

A key milestone so far has been completing his crane operator licence and undertaking HIAB training. As well as  being trained as a certified tail lift engineer for LOLER

“I had to get my licence before starting the training, so that was an important achievement for me.”

The apprenticeship is helping Tom develop a wide range of skills, with a focus on becoming multi-skilled across vehicle repairs, crane systems and tail lift servicing.

“I just want to keep learning as much as I can and build my experience.”

Part of the Team

Tom is quick to highlight the supportive environment within the workshop.

“Everyone’s really good to work with. It’s a great team and there’s always a good laugh.”

As the youngest member of the team, he has been welcomed and supported throughout his development.

He has also taken on board valuable advice from colleagues.

“One piece of advice that’s stuck with me is to think outside the box.”

Looking Ahead

Tom is keen to continue developing his skills, particularly in crane repairs, tail lift servicing and attending breakdowns.

“Going out on a breakdown seemed daunting at first,” he admits, “But with the initial support, it’s something I enjoy, it’s great to get out and about and helping with repairs.”

His goal is to build a secure and successful career in the engineering industry.

“I want to keep improving and make a long-term career out of it.”
